Week beginning 13th April

New topic looking at Chemistry and the Earth's Atmosphere

Produce a poster all about what the Earth and it's atmosphere.

Divide your poster into sections to show what it was like in the first billion years of existence. Then show what the Earth and it's atmosphere is like now. Describe how the Earth's atmosphere has changed over billions of year. The main focus should be on how carbon dioxide levels have reduced and oxygen levels have increased.

Please present your work as an information booklet.

  • What is the greenhouse effect and how does it help planet Earth?
  • Name the main greenhouse gases present in the atmosphere and describe what they do. 
  • Include a diagram showing how the greenhouse effect works. 
  • Describe how human activity is increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Give examples of these activities.

  • Identify what atoms most fuels contains.
  • What is combustion?
  • When fuels combust what atom from the air do they react with?
  • Describe what complete combustion is and what compounds are produced.
  • Describe what incomplete combustion is and what compounds are produced.
  • What are the problems with incomplete combustion?
  • When fuels are burned, they often have impurities in them which produce atmospheric pollutants. Name 4 different atmospheric pollutants. 
  • Describe how acid rain is formed.
  • Describe how smog is formed.

Task 1  - Present your work as an information poster.

You've been shipwrecked on a desert island and you have no water. 

Describe how you can make sea water safe to drink. 

You can use any items from your broken sail boat to help purify the water.
