Miss Witcombe Wins Award

18th May 2017

Some of you may have heard the exciting news on the radio this week that our Expressive Arts teacher, Flo Witcombe, has won the Pride of Devon’s Teacher of the Year Award.

She was nominated in January by Ms Sharpe - mum of Lewis in Year 10 - when she heard about the awards on Radio Exe.

She wanted to recognise Southbrook in some way for the care and support we give children like Lewis and to acknowledge the difference a good school can make to their lives.

Donna Sharpe put Flo forward for the award as she wanted to highlight the impact she has had on our children’s confidence and self-esteem through the performing arts.

Ms Sharpe wrote in her nomination:

“Since Miss Witcombe joined the school, I have witnessed non-verbal children engage with pride in many school performances acting and singing their hearts out. They dance with enthusiasm and passion when previously their disabilities have held them back. Many of the children struggle to make eye contact and find crowds or noise very difficult. Flo is such an inspiration because she has found a way into their world and helped them step a little way into ours.”

Flo will be attending a glittering award ceremony to receive her award hosted by Radio Exe at Westpoint on Friday evening.
