Life Skills at Key Stage 3

The introduction of discrete Life Skills lessons in KS3 follows on from the success of the KS4 Life Skills programme with the following aims and objectives:

  • Supporting literacy, numeracy and ICT skills and their functional application in both school and the wider community

  • Support and reinforce the practical application of learning in other curriculum areas e.g. biology through work on the school allotment and PSHE by learning about leading a healthy lifestyle and environmental issues.

  • Keeping our children safe in the wider community by teaching road awareness and stranger danger

  • Keeping our children safe in the kitchen

  • Keeping our children safe in the garden (we have seen an increase in the number of pupils with allotments/kitchen gardens)

  • Informing our children of the dangers of building sites (especially with the growth of The Rydons and other estates in the surrounding area)

  • To help our children make long term lifestyle choices to keep themselves healthy, fit and active.

Introduction and plenary sessions are used to carry out formative assessment in every lesson. Summative assessment is made at the end of every module and used to track and record pupil progress.

The department carries out an annual evaluation process to respond to the changing cohorts of pupils and to adapt and develop new areas of learning. Schemes of work are tailored to meet the needs of individuals and groups of pupils and ensure that the critical skills of initiative, problem solving and independent thinking and learning skills are encouraged across the curriculum.

Through Life Skills lessons we hope to teach our young people independent living skills that will be of benefit to them throughout their lives. Parental feedback has been very positive. Many have reported that the skills taught in Life Skills lessons are being practised both at home and in the wider community.


Life Skills at Key Stage 4

Pupils work towards achieving a range of qualifications that are designed to meet their specific needs as learners. These include:

  • Life Skills at Entry Level 3 – this is taught to pupils who do not access a vocational course and focusses on cooking, retail and enterprise

  • Independent Living Skills at Entry Level 1 & 3 – this course includes units of work including cooking, cleaning a home, looking after clothes, personal hygiene and gardening.

Both courses are accredited by the awarding body Ascentis and are OFQUAL approved. Pupils gain these qualifications by building on skills gained in Key Stage 3. Some sessions are classroom based but many lessons are practical and take place either in the Food Technology room, the Life Skills Centre or on the school allotment.

Literacy is supported by using the Next Steps marking scheme when completing written tasks. Numeracy and ICT skills are developed across a range of units taught including shopping and enterprise, as part of the qualifications delivered.

It is hoped that by studying practical life skills our learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of how to be more independent in society.
