Two year 9 pupils and two members of staff have had a really busy weekend visiting the World War I battlefields of France and Belgium. We travelled by coach with other schools from Devon and Cornwall and stayed in Ypres, Belgium. From here we found out about the fighting on the Western Front by visiting museums, exhibitions and cemeteries as well as travelling to France to visit the battlefields of The Somme. Perhaps the two most moving parts of the trip were the memorial service at The Menin Gate and visiting the Devonshire Regiment cemetery at Mametz where so many soldiers who came from our local area died on 1st July 1916. We laid remembrance poppies and learnt about how and why these men died at this most terrible time in history.
