World Book Day

7th March 2016

To celebrate World Book Day this year, we marked the event with a 3 day festival. We started on World Book Day itself, Thursday 3rd March, with visiting artist Darrell Wakelam. As a whole school the pupils all contributed to four character portraits; Willy Wonka, Harry Potter, The Mad Hatter and Alice, and playwright, William Shakespeare. Made out of paper, card and a lot of masking tape the children made some fantastic art work with Darrell which they finished on Friday 4th March.

The celebrations didn’t stop there. On Monday 7th March all pupils and staff dressed up as book characters and followed a book themed curriculum for the day. We kicked the day off with a special assembly which was interrupted by Mr and Mrs Twit playing tricks on each other. Once they had stopped throwing worms, pupils and staff we given the opportunity to show everyone their costumes, which were very impressive.

For the rest of the day pupils enjoyed many literature activities. During English lessons the children shared their poetry and Macbeth monologues around our campfire, whilst they cooked bananas and brioche with chocolate. It was lovely to hear so many share their work with others.

At the end of the day, prizes were awarded to the best costumes. First prize for pupils went to The Hulk, Jamie and the runners up were Tamzin (Dorothy) and Hannah (Alice in Wonderland). The staff prize went to The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Mrs Dugdale. The runners up were Mr and Mrs Twit.

To finish the day off, everyone received their free World Book Day books. A big thank you to WH Smiths Exeter who supplied our books, ensuring every child was able to enjoy a free book this year.
